Job Description / Responsibility
- WorldFish (Bangladesh) is hiring a Gender Scientist for a 5-year project funded by USAID called 'ECOFISH'. The overall goal of ECOFISH is to ensure improved resilience and governance of estuarine ecosystem and livelihoods of communities reliant on the Hilsa fishery of the Ganges/ Meghna Rivers in Bangladesh.
- The Gender Scientist will be responsible to develop research activities to enhance socio-ecological and economic resilience of target communities, and in particular women. S/he will work closely with three senior level scientists seeking to strengthen adaptive co-management of Hilsa fisheries, application of improved science-based fisheries management decision-making, and enhance socio-ecological and economic conditions of the fishers community. Collaborating closely with WorldFish staff on other research projects and integrating research findings is vital for the success of the ECOFISH project.
- Under the direct supervision of the ECOFISH Project Leader and WorldFsish's Country Director, this position will be required to supervise and provide support to staff assigned to the ECOFISH project as follows:
- Improve the design and implementation of gender research and community engagement within resource and conservation planning and decision making, with the specific aim of enhancing well-being in gender equitable ways;
- Integrate and lead gender-focused research in all project activities, e.g. community-based monitoring of target fisheries, payment for ecosystem services scheme and evaluate the gender equitable outcomes;
- Provide scientific leadership, mentoring and advice to other project team members, partners and stakeholders in relation to gender integration;
- Synthesize learning and produce quality scientific documents as required by the funding agency, for internal WorldFish requirements and broader national and international science and development communities; and
- Working closely with the gender team of WorldFish, advance understanding of the impact and roles of fisheries management in achieving CGIAR intermediate development outcomes and of sustainably and equitably meeting food, nutrition and poverty reduction goals.
- Core Competencies:
- Planning competencies: familiar with the use Theory of Change (ToC) for planning, prioritizing, monitoring and evaluation of Research in Development (RinD) initiatives;
- Analytical competencies: able to analyse the context of a given development challenge (problem or opportunity) 'situation analysis'; able to reconcile the knowledge of different stakeholders and science; competent in systems thinking and have a knowledge of how to apply systems research methodologies;
- Process competencies: able to facilitate a multi-stakeholder group to a common objective and mutual agenda of complementary activities;
- Learning/ PAR competencies: able to use/embed participatory action research and rural appraisal tools, creating a learning culture;
- Able to understand and manage change processes and deal with resistance & able to work in an interdisciplinary team; and
- Familiarity with gender transformative approaches.

A Master's degree or PhD
in gender-related aspects of Development Studies, Sociology,
Agriculture, Environment, or Aquaculture/ Fisheries. Candidates having
PhD degree will be given preference;

Additional Job Requirements
- Minimum 5 years of experience in a developing country context working on gender-related aspects of community-based development with a focus on enhancing adaptive capacity and resilience;
- Experience in stakeholder participation and community engagement, with a specific understanding of the role of social norms/cultural beliefs in producing gender-equitable outcomes;
- Experience in project programming, implementation, training and capacity building around gender;
- Experience of interacting with national, regional and international R and D practitioners and policy makers;
- Excellent proficiency of spoken and written English with strong research and writing skills;
- Publications in peer reviewed journals and regional/international magazines;
- Qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis skills; and
- Flexibility and willingness to travel frequently to and fro field sites located in Southern region of Bangladesh.

This position will be based at
WorldFish's country office in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The initial employment
contract will be for a three-year term, with possibility of renewal. It
is a Managerial position which is open for Bangladeshi national (NRS)
and International (IRS) candidates. Subject to applicant status, salary
and benefits will be in compliance with WorldFish NRS or IRS
remuneration policies.
